YOGA PHILOSOPHY 101
The What, Why, and How of Yoga
Saturday, January 17, 2026 4:00-6:00PM
District Hot Yoga in New City, NY
What is yoga - and why has it survived and mattered for thousands of years?
In this 2-hour introductory workshop, we’ll explore yoga beyond the poses by answering three essential questions:
What is yoga? (The definition)
Why do we practice? (The deeper purpose)
How do we live it? (The path and practices)
Using a few foundational ideas from the Yoga Sutras, we will look at how yoga understands the min, why inner steadiness matters, and how the rest of the yogic teachings offer a practical roadmap for daily life. We’ll also introduce the Eight Limbs of Yoga to provide context for how movement, breath, ethics, focus, and meditation all fit together.
This workshop is designed to be accessible, practical, and discussion-based - no prior knowledge of yoga philosophy is required. Expect real-life examples, thoughtful conversation, and time for Q & A.
Ideal for anyone curious about the meaning and purpose of yoga, and how it applies off the mat.
Investment - $55.

The Details
Curious what the kleshas and gunas are all about? Dive into this ancient wisdom in yoga philosophy as we explore the kleshas, the gunas, and their interconnectedness.
According to Patanjali’s sutras, the kleshas are the obstacles to our spiritual growth and the reasons why we suffer. While on the other hand, the gunas represent the three fundamental qualities of our nature and all things. Through exploring the gunas we will gain insights into our thought patterns and tendencies.
This workshop aims to not only educate you on these two core concepts, but to also deepen your yoga practice, your knowledge of yoga philosophy, and foster your well-being in everyday life. Don’t miss this chance to discover how to overcome obstacles and cultivate positive qualities that can lead to a more harmonious and fulfilling life.

The Yamas & Niyamas:
A Deeper Look

The Details
If you’re looking to live a more yogic lifestyle and incorporate the principles of the yamas and niyamas into your daily life, join me for an empowering workshop. The yamas and niyamas are foundational yogic teachings that help us understand the world around us and how we can live a more peaceful and fulfilling life; a more enlightened life with less suffering.
As yoga teachers, it is our responsibility to lead by example and practice yoga more than one hour of asana per day. In this 25-hour module, we will dive deep into the yamas and niyamas, the moral and ethical guidelines in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras; offering the opportunity to live a more yogic lifestyle. We will examine each yama and niyama individually, as we review various interpretations through books, presentations and discussion. We will take each of the ancient and sacred guidelines and interpret their meaning into our modern world and lives today.
This Yoga Alliance Certified training will include a yoga asana practice each day, lecture and discussion around yoga philosophy and how to apply these moral and ethical guidelines to our everyday lives.
Qualifications
This training is open to anyone looking to dive deeper into yoga philosophy through the yamas & niyamas (not only yoga teachers!). If you are a yoga teacher, this training will count towards a 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training with Flow Yoga Studio.
